This is Day 39 of my challenge to get six pack abs.
I posted a picture of my tensed stomach yesterday because I thought it would help you to see my progress.
It certainly helped me and it felt good to some hint of abdominal muscles on display.
I’m not sure that I’ve ever had a perfectly flat stomach as an adult. I like to kid myself that maybe I did, but memory plays tricks and I certainly can’t find any photographic evidence.
One of the most exciting things about this process is finding out what my stomach muscles actually look like.
Symmetric vs Asymmetric abs
What are symmetric abs?
Symmetric abs are where the abdominal muscles are mostly the same shape and size and aligned side by side on both sides of the abdomen – like a mirror image. From this alignment you get what is more commonly known as the ‘six-pack’.
What are asymmetric abs?
Asymmetric abs are misaligned with the muscles on one side of the abdomen not being a mirror image of the other. Commonly you get the muscles on one side higher than on the other.
Sometimes you also get the appearance of a 5 pack.
Do I have symmetric abs or asymmetric abs?
But even though I can’t see my abs fully, I couldn’t resist prodding away with my fingers to try and trace the outline.
From what I can tell, they’re more or less symmetrical but I won’t know for sure until I lose all the fat.
Do symmetrical abs look better?
I’m not sure it matters. A flat stomach is a flat stomach and whatever the underlying structure it’s worth having.
I’ve seen quite a few posts on body building forums and fitness websites where guys are obviously disheartened at having asymmetric abs.
They’re generally looking for exercises to correct the asymmetry, but often they’re told that it’s genetic and there’s nothing they can do about it.
My personal preference leans towards symmetry, but if it turns out my own abs are not symmetrical I’ll still be happy.
