One Meal a Day to Six-Pack Abs 013: What you tell yourself makes all the difference to the success of your diet

6 pack abs challengeThis is Day 13 of my flat abdominals challenge!

Your actions dictate your results and your thoughts dictate your actions.

You stay fat or lose weight through the choices you make or fail to make – and that little game is played out in your head.

Assuming you sleep for 8 hours (Ha! How many parents of young children get 8 hours?!) that gives you sixteen hours a day to obsess over food. It gives you sixteen hours of arguments over what to eat, when to eat it and how much to eat.

getting a six pack

This is me losing weight and well on my way to a six pack!

Sensibly, you’ve got an eating plan and you’ve made all your decisions in advance. Right? You already know the answer to the questions of what, when and how much but it’s not that simple.

My life as a work at home parent isn’t just about my eating habits. There are a thousand other things pressing for my attention during the day and exerting a certain amount of stress.

As important to me as my weight loss is I can still override my eating plan and guzzle down half a chocolate cake undet the right conditions.

Of course, then I have to fill whatever remains of the sixteen hours with guilt and recriminations, along with the inevitable argument over whether I should abandon the diet for the entire day and eat the other half of the cake. Might as well eh? (er… no!)

When you’re hungry–and you will be if you’re running a calorie deficit–your mind will chatter away and convince you that it’s OK just this once to sneak one tiny cookie or a child-sized chocolate bar (after all, they’re really small).

If your mind can’t sabotage you that way, it will try to convince you that you’ve plateaued or that you’re gaining weight, especially if you’re daft enough to weigh yourself daily. (Don’t do it, it’s a sure fire way to kill your diet.)

If after a few days you’re not seeing the results you’re expecting, your mind will tell you that you’ve gone into starvation mode and that you need to eat like a pig to kick start your metabolism (because you read it somewhere).

If you get even a hint of a sore throat you’ll be convinced that you’ve destroyed your immune system and that you need to eat to restore your inner defences. And at the very least, you’ll remember your mother told you to feed a cold and starve a fever and that’s all the excuse you need to reach for the ice cream.

That voice doesn’t need an invitation, it’s just there. You need to put another voice in there, a deliberate voice with a strong message and one that you hear from the moment you wake and not just in response to the diet killing voice.

  • You need to tell yourself that what you’re doing is life changing.
  • You need to tell yourself that you’ve got a job to do.
  • That you’ve got everything you need to get it done.
  • You need to tell yourself that you can do it.
  • Tell yourself you’re eating enough to meet your needs.
  • That you have enough will-power to push through the tough times.
  • You need to tell yourself that you’re strong.
  • That you’re in control.
  • You need to tell yourself that hunger is just a signal and not a command.
  • That the hunger will fade.
  • Tell yourself how proud you are of what you’ve achieved so far.
  • Tell yourself how proud you’ll be when you’ve achieved your goal.

Tell yourself positive things that make you feel good in the here-and-now and tell yourself things that relate to your future self who will thank you for making the right decision in what was a very tough moment.

The thoughts you allow into you head matter more than you might imagine, so make sure you think awesome thoughts that serve you and will push you on to success.

I see some definite definition around the lower ribs area on day 13. At last something is happening. Quite fascinating now actually.

I guess I knew it would be a slow process, as I’m not actually starving myself (there’s just a modest calorie deficit) but it’s good to see some hint of improvement. I’m hoping to see decent improvement over the next couple of weeks. Should be fun to watch 🙂
